Should you still consider becoming a telephone operator

Should you totenstill consider becoming a telephone operatorIts an iconic image from the middle of the 20th century a telephone operator sitting at a crazily lit-up switchboard, wearing headphones and directing phone calls wherever they need to go. Technologically, weve moved on and digitizedaverage calls dont need that kind of human help anymore. But what about those operators? Are there still jobs out there for efficient people with great phone skills? googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Short answer yes. The job just looks much different than it used to. Todays telephone operators are specialty agents, working directly in customer service to manage large volumes of phone calls, or in places like hotels or other hospitality facilities that may have their own internal phone systems. Instead of manually placing calls, todays telephone operator is likely juggling multiple lines, performing triage on incoming calls in a call center or other mu lti-line phone operation. Theyre also employed in emergency dispatch centers and other places where a human voice and expertise is needed to route calls quickly and efficiently to the right place.Where can you find phone operator jobs?Because the job landscape for phone operators is much different than it welches just 30 years ago, youll need to use some creativity in yourjob search. You might want to start by looking at particular industries instead of making general searches. Look for openings at telecommunications companies, as well as logistics companies, hotels, and other industries that still rely on phone bookings or reservations or that offer a lot of phone support (like call centers).Phone companies also still employ live people for directory assistance calls who handle things such as questions about public phone numbers and addresses and assist people with placing international calls. Phone operators are also still needed to help people place collect callssure, these are n otlage quite as prevalent as they used to be with unlimited cell phone calling plans, but theyre still relevant enough to require phone operators to place them. How many phone operator jobs are out there?According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2012 there were fewer than 14,000 people specifically designated as phone operators, but that number expands once you include the hospitality industry, emergency dispatchers, and other support jobs that rely almost entirely on communicating by phone. What skills do phone operators have?Phone operators are essentially customer service personnel, and need to have a certain set of skillsPeople skillsCommunication skillsCustomer service focusOrganizational skillsProblem solving skillsMost companies will provide on-the-job training for its operators, but theres no special training or educational program specifically for phone operators. So should you consider becoming a phone operator? If you have the skills and a strong sense of nostalgia, then why not? We havent become an entirely digital society yet, and sometimes an authoritative and knowledgeable human voice is absolutely as necessary as it ever was.

How did you get to where you are now?JR I attended college at UC Santa Barbara and spent the first few years after graduation working at a boutique Public Relations agency in Los Angeles. I moved to San Diego and spent seven years at a company called Active Network. I started as a Technical Account Manager and worked my way up to become manager of our Account Management and Technical Account Management teams within the Endura nce division. Throughout that time, I saw the company go through lots of phases. The growth from 75 employees to 2,000, plus an IPO and an acquisition. I wanted to move to a smaller organization where I could enact change, so I made the move to San Francisco to work at Practice Fusion. I started off leading the Practice Success team, and over the past three years my role has evolved to Vice President of Practice Solutions where I lead our Sales, Implementation, Customer Service and Technical Support teams.FGB What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?JR For the past year, I have helped create and run the Womens Leadership Circle (WLC) at Practice Fusion, which aims to foster an inclusive and diverse community through peer support, networking and professional development. I love hav ing the opportunity to help women develop skills that will help them grow in their careers.FGB What is a challenge that youve faced and overcome?JR Earlier this year our company went through a round of layoffs and letting team members go was one of the hardest things I had to do in my career. While the process wasnt easy, I learned how to manage an organization through significant change and how to drive performance during adversity. The company is thriving and I am proud of my contribution to their success.FGB Who is your Fairygodboss? And why?JR Although it sounds clich, I would say my Fairygodboss is Sheryl Sandberg since her advice had a profound impact on my career. I clearly remember the moment five years ago when I watched Sheryls Ted Talk video, Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders At The Top. I was recently married and we were thinking about starting a family in the near future, and everything Sheryl spoke about in that video applied to me. I was subconsciously turning down op portunities, all because I was stressed about balancing my fictional baby and work. I suddenly became aware that I was holding myself back for no reason. Thanks to that wake up call, I took a new job opportunity and have seen hyper growth in my career because I am determined to put myself in the best position before I have children. And with five additional years of life experience under my belt, I am confident that I can balance a successful career and a family.Lightning RoundFGB What do you do when youre notlage working?JR Spend time with my amazing husband.
